Frequently Asked Questions
Has it been done before?
No. But back in 2010 Gerry Duffy and Ken Whitelaw successfully accomplished 32 marathons in 32 counties in 32 days. This was & still is a huge achievement and an inspiration for myself and others. That said it was to be another 4 years before I ran what was to be my first ever marathon in 2014 resulting in a Guinness world record at the Cork City Marathon. I ran in my full fire gear finishing in 3hrs 41min 10sec in aid of the Irish Guide dogs for the Blind. I have since ran 40+ marathons or longer events and it is now my intention to push boundaries and take on this huge challenge attempt 32 marathons 32 counties in 16 days. (Possible or impossible only time will tell)
This medal is currently in the final stage of design and we will be engaging with some of the best medal manufactures to bring our design from a drawing to the amazing finished article. Being a runner Alex has received a few nice medals over the years and is putting a lot of time into designing a medal he would be happy to receive. So please be patient and we will keep you updated.
If you wish we have sponsorship cards available. For more information go to the contact us section or the Register to Run in the drop down menu. Thanks Alex Ollie & Crew.
Are you mad?
Funnily enough I have been asked this on more than one occasion. I can only answer yes, but in my book MAD stands for Motivates And Determined. All jokes aside this is somthing i will take very seriously, I will adapt my training for this challenge and hope for a bit of luck also. A challenge like this you need everything to go right smalll issues have a way of becoming big problems. I will also gather the expertise of various professionals.
How will your marathons be measured?
By GPS running watch on the day and possibly measured before hand also. In some cases we will have run the route previously in training or realy on local knowledge. Routes will be Parks running loopes, Greenways, possibly a Running track & one if not two large scale marathon events. Please see routes for more specific information on each & check out our facebook page which will carry live updates throughout the challenge.
Will there be chip timing?
Sorry but no chip timing. It just would not be feesable or logisticaly possible to organise the challenge in this manner. It should be remembered it’s a challenge and the focus is on raising money and awareness for our charity the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind so it will not be feasible to organise 32 chip timed events. Each run will be logged and recored by the team. Every person that joins us will be part of an amazing unforgettable journey.
Can others take part with you?
Yes we would love people to get in touch and register with us. You can start ahead of with or after Alex and remember to get the all clear from your Dr if in any doubt.
Do I have to run with you at your speed?
The company would be great but to answer your questions no you can run faster, slower, or the same pace. You can start before during or after I start my run what ever fits your time restraints and hopefully we will overlap at some stage and get to have a chat. But I am fully aware not everyone will be available to run on my schedule so yes we are very flexible. + 32 marathons in 16 days i am sure people will witness me running jogging walking what ever it takes…
I am not a marathon runner can I still run?
Of course you can this is all about setting challenges For Alex its 2 marathons a day Ollie 50 km a day and i am sure we will have people set and achieve their own amazing challenges. Alex would love to see you whether you run a little or a lot it would be great to share the journey. Give the facebook page a like and message us with your story your challenge we would love to hear it and look forward to meeting you. Everyone is welcome you set your own distance your own challenge & you participate at a pace that suits you. If you wish to join us & walk a mile or two you would be more than welcome. With 32 marathons in 16 days i am sure my pace will vary throughout the challenge. Hopefully we will share a few miles along this challenge and you would never know who might stop by. More on the latter I look forward to sharing this journey with as many people as possible.
Are there prize categories each day?
No sorry this is a huge charity challenge. We will endevour to keep over heads to a bare minimum and wish to thank various sponsors for helping us achieve this. The true measure of success of this challenge is down to the generosity of our sponsors and supporters donating to the 32 marathons 32 counties 16 days Irish guide dogs challenge. There can be only one winner and thats the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. But for everyone else that registers to take part there will be a beautiful participants medal. This will not be an easy challenge for Alex or Ollie and there focus is 100% charity driven.
